AFRAM Caucus Black History Contest a Huge Success
March 24, 2008
The SEIU Local 517M AFRAM Caucus held its first annual Black History contest in February. This is an event that will be sponsored annually by the AFARM Caucus. This year we open the contest up to sixth graders in the Saginaw and Buena Vista public schools. 25 students from Ricker middle, Webber middle, Central middle and Saginaw Arts and Sciences academy participated in this years contest. The contest committee members selected the top three essays and awarded the winners with a cash prize and a plaque from the SEIU 517M AFRAM caucus. All participants received a thank you letter and a certificate for entering the contest.
On February 21, 2008 the top three entrants were invited to be recognized for their efforts at annual African- American heritage dinner at Saginaw High School. Daveda Quinn who is a SEIU and AFRAM member is President of the Saginaw High School parent teacher association. Sister Quinn has made it possible for the AFRAM Caucuses annual black history contest to be on the agenda at the annual American-American heritage dinner
The contest was a huge success with the administrator and students at all of the schools. They are very impressed with what AFRAM is doing in the public schools. We let the administrators know that AFRAM will be here to help in any way. We talked with the administrators about our mentor program, which is scheduled, to being in September 2008. They are excited to know that AFRAM is going to be an influence on a lot of kids.
